We missed the drift ice last year by two weeks, so this is the second year we asked Hokkaido Treasure Island Travel (HTIT) to arrange our trip to get onto some. We got onto some drift ice because HTIT and our driver/guide (also from last year) were flexible and fast thinking, dealing with the unpredictable/changing conditions (after we went onto some, they melted away within the hour). We also went to the beautiful area of Lake Tōya and Mount Yōtei (sometimes called Hokkaido’s Mt. Fuji), which we didn’t have time to go last year. The hotels/ryokans HTIT arranged were marvelous with excellent food and in-room onsen. HTIT helped us with our food preferences/allergies so that our meals are individualized (my wife and I sometimes will have different items). Given the language barrier and logistics challenges, we could not have arrange these kind of trips (slow/flexible/individualized, eat locally). Next time we plan to come in the warmer seasons to experience a different Hokkaido, and will ask HTIT to arrange everything again.
