Your drive toward the Shiretoko Peninsula features legendary stops. Experience the “Road to the Sky,” a breathtaking straight road that seems to disappear into the horizon, and visit the Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden to see the seasonal wildflowers in full bloom. As you enter the UNESCO World Heritage site, marvel at the misty spray of the Oshinkoshin Waterfalls.

Finally, check into Kiki Shiretoko Natural Resort. Relax and recharge with their famous buffet, showcasing a bountiful selection of fresh Hokkaido ingredients for both dinner and breakfast. It is a day where adventure meets ultimate relaxation.

Day 3 is dedicated to deep immersion into the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site often called “the last frontier.” Begin your morning with a choice of breathtaking adventures: embark on a Bear Watching Cruise to spot brown bears roaming the rugged coastline, or join a Whale Watching Cruise to witness the magnificent marine life of the Nemuro Strait.
To deepen your understanding of this unique ecosystem, we suggest a visit to the Shiretoko World Heritage Center. The afternoon highlight is the Shiretoko Five Lakes Group Walk (3km) starting at 2:00 PM. Led by an expert guide, you will wander through pristine forests and marshes, where the majestic Shiretoko mountains reflect beautifully in the crystal-clear lakes.

In the volcanic heart of the park, witness the dramatic steam vents of Mt. Io and the legendary clear waters of Lake Mashu. For a moment of tranquility, enjoy the vast views of Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake.

Your day concludes at the prestigious Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga. Experience the height of Japanese hospitality with a sophisticated Kaiseki dinner—a multi-course celebration of local seasonal flavors—followed by a relaxing soak in the hot springs overlooking Lake Akan.

Afterward, take a peaceful stroll along the Bokke Promenade to witness mysterious bubbling mud volcanoes rising from the forest floor.
A visit to the Ainu Kotan (Ainu Village) is essential to understanding the spiritual heart of Hokkaido. Explore traditional crafts and learn about the profound harmony between the Ainu people and nature. For a truly authentic experience, we highly recommend the optional forest exploration with a local Ainu guide (additional 15,000 yen per person), offering rare insights into indigenous wisdom and the “spirit of the woods.”

Enjoy your final evening at Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga. Indulge in a magnificent Kaiseki dinner—a multi-course celebration of seasonal local flavors—and relax in the soothing hot springs, reflecting on the timeless wonders of your journey.

Day
06

On Day 6, your self-drive journey takes you from the mountains of Akan to the vast, open landscape of the Kushiro Marsh. The morning highlight is a serene canoeing tour on the Kushiro River. Guided by a local nature expert, you will glide silently through the heart of Japan’s largest wetland, offering a rare opportunity to spot wildlife such as the red-crowned crane or Ezo deer from the water’s level.

After your river adventure, head to the Hosooka Observatory for a breathtaking panoramic view of the marshland winding toward the horizon. In the city, visit the lively Washo Market, famous for its “Katte-don”—a customizable seafood bowl where you can pick your favorite fresh toppings directly from the stalls.

As the sun begins to set, make your way to the iconic Nusamai Bridge, renowned for having one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. For dinner, we highly recommend trying Robata BBQ, a traditional Kushiro style of charcoal-grilling fresh local ingredients right before your eyes. You will spend the night at a hotel in the heart of Kushiro City, surrounded by the nostalgic atmosphere of this historic port town.

Day
07

On the final day of your extraordinary self-drive journey, take a moment to visit the Kushiro City Red-crowned Crane Nature Park (480 yen per person). This park offers a rare opportunity to see the majestic Tancho cranes—a cherished symbol of Hokkaido and a designated special natural monument—up close in a serene environment. It is a peaceful and moving way to conclude your immersion into Hokkaido’s wilderness.

From the park, it is a final, pleasant 40-minute drive to Kushiro Airport. Enjoy the last views of the vast marshes and open skies as you head toward the terminal. Upon arrival, simply return your rental car at the airport counter, where the process is quick and convenient.

As you check in for your departure flight from Kushiro Airport, you will carry home not just souvenirs, but a heart full of memories from the wild and beautiful Green Season.
