The hikes on this self-guided tour offer a perfect balance of relaxed exploration and challenging trekking through the unique wilderness of Eastern Hokkaido. The itinerary focuses on the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park (Wetland area) and the Lake Kussharo area (Part of Akan-Mashu National Park; characterized by volcanoes and lakes), with the option to extend your journey towards the Shiretoko Peninsula.
The longest day is Day 3, covering approximately 25 km along the shores of Lake Kussharo. However, most of the tour features more moderate days of around 12-18 km through wetlands and rural landscapes.
The trails are generally smooth and flat, with most sections being paved, but sections may involve rural roads and areas where signage is sparse, making your detailed itinerary and the local support network essential.
This tour is perfect for adventurous walkers who favor stretching their legs in lesser-known, expansive wilderness areas and appreciate authentic local dining experiences over technical mountain climbing.
